Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen says filming a western in South Africa was surreal.

The actor stars in The Salvation, a movie that was co-produced by a Danish company and a South African one and was screened at the Cannes film festival on Saturday night.

Mikkelsen told Eyewitness News filming in South Africa was a unique experience.

“A big part of the crew was speaking Xhosa and Afrikaans, which was so surreal because here we have guys with cowboy hats and then we have people clicking.”

He says the coproduction felt like a family.

“We had a fantastic time and got to know everybody really well.”

The movie, which is set in the wild west of the 1800s, was shot on a farm just outside Johannesburg.
